Estimation of Small-scale Wind Fields from Synthetic Aperture Radar Data
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper explores the possibility of estimating smallscale vector wind fields from SAR data by applying certain dynamical constraints to the wind field. The method is illustrated for the case of a diverging surface flow field that is intended to represent a precipitationinduced downdraft. A simulated radar cross section map generated from this flow field is used to reconstruct the wind field by choosing the wind direction at each point so as to minimize the vorticity. The method works well for this case because the input wind field was chosen to be irrotational. For cases in which the vorticity is not zero, it may be possible to generalize the method by applying other dynamical constraints.

Extracting Fine-Scale Wind Fields from Synthetic Aperture Radar Images of the Ocean Surface
ork is described whose long-term goal is the extraction and analysis of fine-scale wind fields from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the ocean surface. Results are based on a field experiment in which a SAR image was taken nearly simultaneously with in situ aircraft-based turbulence and radar altimeter measurements. These results show a direct correlation between SAR “streaks” and atmos...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Remote Sensing of Ocean Wind and Wave Fields
The technical approach in this project involves three types of models: (1) the two-scale electromagnetic scattering model, which relates the radar backscatter to the surface wave spectrum, (2) the wave action model, which describes the relationship between the surface wave spectrum and the near-surface wind field, and (3) atmospheric dynamical models that describe or constrain the spatial varia...
متن کاملA Novel Method in Ocean Wind Field Estimation Using SAR Images
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a useful and efficient tool for providing high-resolution images from sea surface wind fields. Wind field analysis based on SAR image descriptors makes the estimation of wind direction and speed possible. This is very useful for applications and Studies such as oil spills, waves, ocean circulation, marine meteorology and the coupling of oceanic and atmospheric ...
متن کاملOptimization Of Wind and Wave Fields for Typical Marine Radar Using Synthetic Aperture Method
This paper deals with the use of the wave-radar for sea-state monitoring. The radar used here is popular as marine radar. SEA STATE monitoring by X-band Mare Radar system is becoming increasingly interesting, also due to its spatial resolution, which is much higher than the resolution of the relatively more common high-frequency (HF) coastal radars. In addition, compared to HF radar, Xband rada...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Exploiting Intra-scale and Inter-scale Dependencies
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are inherently affected by a multiplicative noise-like phenomenon called speckle, which is indeed the nature of all coherent systems. Speckle decreases the performance of almost all the information extraction methods such as classification, segmentation, and change detection, therefore speckle must be suppressed. Despeckling can be applied by the multilooki...
